A mature oak can look perfectly healthy from the driveway and still have serious decay hidden inside its trunk. By the time a tree drops a large limb, leans after a storm, or develops a visible cavity, the damage may have been building for years. Knowing how to spot tree decay gives New Haven County property owners time to make a safe, practical decision before a tree threatens a home, driveway, fence, vehicle, or power line.
Decay does not always mean a tree needs to come down. Some trees can be monitored, pruned, or treated for contributing problems. The concern is whether the decay has weakened the parts of the tree that carry its weight – especially the trunk, major limbs, and root flare at the base.
Start at the Base of the Tree
The lowest few feet of a tree tell you a great deal about its condition. Walk around the trunk from a safe distance and look for changes in the bark, unusual swelling, open wounds, and signs that the base is no longer solid.
A cavity or hollow area near the ground deserves attention, particularly on a large, mature tree. Trees can live with a hollow section for many years, but the remaining sound wood must be strong enough to support the canopy. A small opening is not automatically a failure risk, while a large cavity on the side facing your house or parking area may be a different situation entirely.
Also watch for soft, crumbling wood. If bark has fallen away and the exposed wood looks stringy, dark, flaky, or sponge-like, decay is likely active. Do not probe deeply with tools or try to break material away. That can enlarge a wound, and standing close to a compromised tree is not a good idea.
Root flare matters as well. This is the area where the trunk widens into major roots. Mushrooms, cracks, sunken areas, or loose soil around this zone can point to root or butt rot. A tree with weakened roots may stay green overhead while losing its ability to stay anchored during high wind or saturated soil conditions.
How to Spot Tree Decay in the Trunk
The trunk is the tree’s main support column. Decay inside it often becomes visible through a few clear warning signs, although an arborist may need to inspect the tree to determine how deep the problem goes.
Vertical cracks are one concern. A fresh crack can result from storm stress, frost injury, or a structural weakness that has been developing over time. Deep splits, especially those running from a branch union toward the ground, can signal a failure point. A crack paired with a heavy limb extending over a target should be assessed promptly.
Look for seams, bulges, and areas where the trunk appears flattened or distorted. Trees grow wood around wounds and weak points. That growth can be a positive response, but it can also indicate that the tree has spent years compensating for an old injury or internal defect.
Dead bark is another clue. If a broad section of bark is loose, missing, or separating from the trunk, the tissue beneath may no longer be functioning. On some species, bark texture naturally changes with age, so avoid judging the tree by one patch alone. The pattern, size, location, and condition of the wood underneath all matter.
Fungi Are a Warning Sign, Not Just a Yard Detail
Shelf-like mushrooms growing from a trunk, large branch, or root area are among the most useful visible signs of decay. These fungal growths are often called conks. They indicate that fungi have colonized wood inside the tree and are breaking it down.
Not every mushroom near a tree means the tree is failing. Fungi can grow from buried roots, old stumps, mulch, or decaying wood beneath the soil. The bigger concern is a conk attached directly to the living trunk or emerging from the root flare.
Take note of when and where it appears. A single mushroom that comes and goes may deserve a closer look. Repeated or expanding fungal growth, especially on a tree with cavities, dieback, or a lean, warrants a professional evaluation. Do not remove the fungus and assume the issue is solved. The visible growth is only the fruiting body. The decay process may remain inside the tree.
Inspect Major Limbs and Branch Unions
A tree can have a sound trunk but still pose a risk from decayed limbs. Check the larger branches first, especially those over roofs, patios, walkways, play areas, and parking spaces.
Dead limbs are usually bare when nearby branches have leaves, though season and species affect what you see. The bark may be missing, and smaller twigs may snap easily. A dead branch does not always mean the whole tree is decayed, but it should be removed before it falls on its own.
Pay close attention to old pruning cuts and broken branch stubs. If a branch was removed improperly or broke during a storm, decay can move inward from the wound. A dark, hollowed, or soft branch stub is more concerning than a cleanly closed pruning wound.
Weak branch unions are common on trees with two or more main stems. If the stems form a tight V-shaped connection with bark trapped between them, that union may not be as strong as it appears. Add visible cracking, decay, or a heavy unbalanced canopy, and the risk rises. Proper trimming can sometimes reduce weight and improve the situation, but severe structural defects may require removal.
Notice Changes in the Canopy
Tree decay is often a structural issue, not a leaf issue. Still, the canopy can provide useful clues. Compare the tree with similar trees nearby and with its own appearance in past seasons.
Thin foliage, unusually small leaves, early fall color, bare branch tips, and dead sections high in the crown can indicate stress. Drought, insects, compacted soil, construction damage, and disease can cause the same symptoms, so canopy decline alone does not confirm decay. It does tell you the tree may not be responding well to a problem below.
One-sided decline deserves extra attention. When one major side of a tree dies back while the other remains full, look for trunk damage, root loss, or decay near the affected section. If the tree has been struck by equipment, had soil piled against its trunk, or lost major roots during excavation, the cause may be underground.
A New Lean Needs Immediate Attention
Many established trees naturally grow with some lean. The concern is a lean that is new, worsening, or accompanied by soil movement around the roots. After heavy rain or wind, inspect the ground on the side opposite the lean. Raised soil, cracking turf, exposed roots, or a gap opening at the trunk base can indicate root failure.
Treat a newly leaning tree as urgent if it can reach a structure, road, utility line, or area people use. Keep people and pets out from beneath it. Do not attempt to pull it straight with a vehicle, rope, or winch. A compromised tree can fail without warning, and utility-related tree hazards should never be handled by a property owner.
Consider the Tree’s Location and Recent History
The same amount of decay carries different consequences depending on where the tree stands. A decayed tree at the far edge of a wooded lot may be monitored differently than one hanging over a bedroom, garage, or busy customer entrance.
Recent changes matter, too. Decay often follows an injury that happened years earlier: storm breakage, improper topping, lawn equipment damage, root cutting for a patio or utility line, or soil grade changes around the trunk. Connecticut’s wet springs, summer storms, and winter snow loads can expose weaknesses that were already present.
This is why visual inspection has limits. A trained arborist looks at the whole picture: tree species, size, decay location, canopy weight, root condition, lean, surrounding targets, and the likelihood of failure. A tree may be able to keep standing with selective trimming and monitoring. In other cases, the safest choice is careful removal before weather makes the decision for you.
When to Call for a Professional Tree Assessment
Call for an assessment promptly when you see a cavity near the base, conks on the trunk, deep cracks, major dead limbs, a sudden lean, or exposed roots with shifting soil. The same goes for any tree that has changed after a storm or is growing close enough to damage your home, driveway, fence, or commercial property.
